Having the support of local suppliers and contractors is integral to the success of projects like Woodside Energy’s Scarborough Energy Project, which has committed more than A$90 million to Karratha businesses. With production start-up targeted for 2026, the Scarborough Energy Project will provide over 3,000 jobs during the construction phase and supply reliable energy to Australia and the world.
The expansion of the Pluto LNG facility located on the Burrup Peninsula, near Karratha, WA is set to process approximately five million tonnes per annum of Scarborough gas through Pluto Train 2. Currently under construction, Pluto Train 2 is providing various opportunities for local businesses in Karratha.
One of these opportunities is the movement of hundreds, progressing to more than a thousand, people that require transport to and from the construction site each day.
Northfleet was appointed by our construction partner, Bechtel, as the transport supplier for the duration of the construction phase to safely move an increasing workforce to the construction site, airport, social outings, and local community events.
Terry Klowss, Bechtel’s Site Manager, emphasised the critical role of safe workforce transportation in the success of the project. "Partnering with a local business to ensure the safe commute of our workforce is a cornerstone of our project delivery. Our commitment to the investing in the local economy is demonstrated through strategic local partnerships like this one, which are integral to our operations.
"By implementing best practices and fostering a universal commitment to safety, Bechtel not only enhances the wellbeing of its workforce but also contributes positively to the region by engaging with local businesses and service providers.
“We are excited to be working with Bechtel and Woodside Energy in delivering such a globally significant project and are very grateful for the trust placed in Northfleet to safely and professionally manage the construction project’s transport requirements,” Northfleet Managing Director, Toby Hagen.
Northfleet Managing Director, Toby Hagen, said the team was enjoying the challenge of building transport services from the ground-up and was looking forward to seeing the growth over the next 12 to 18 months, learning and improving as we go.
“We are excited to be working with Bechtel and Woodside Energy in delivering such a globally significant project and are very grateful for the trust placed in Northfleet to safely and professionally manage the construction project’s transport requirements,” said Mr Hagen.
Pluto Train 2 Project Manager, Tom Feutrill, said Woodside Energy is focused on ensuring local organisations benefit from working on the Project.
“The Scarborough Energy Project has awarded over 65 contracts to local Karratha businesses demonstrating our strong commitment to the local community.
So far, the partnership with Northfleet has created 20 jobs with another 80 to come during peak construction, offering an amazing opportunity for business growth and employment during this time,” said Tom.
