Local business spotlight: KBSS Engineering
KBSS Engineering was the first contractor to mobilise to site for the Pluto Train 2 Project and has played a crucial role in supporting the temporary facilities refurbishment.
Woodside Energy’s Scarborough Energy Project is now 73 per cent complete (excluding Pluto Train 1 modifications) and from 2026 it is anticipated to deliver natural gas to help address the anticipated forecast supply gap in the WA domestic gas market.
The project is also providing opportunities for local businesses in Karratha during construction.
In collaboration with Woodside’s Pluto Train 2 lead contractor, Bechtel, the Scarborough Energy Project has contracted 75 Karratha businesses to date and is committed to spending more than A$112 million locally.
KBSS Engineering is one Pilbara business that has been engaged on the project.
In partnership with Brida, KBSS Brida delivered the refurbishment of temporary facilities at the site. KBSS also provided specialist machining services.
Cory Byers, Managing Director of KBSS said, KBSS was proud to be the first contractor to mobilise to the site for the Pluto Train 2 Project.
“With a history of collaboration with Woodside and Bechtel since 2016, at the Karratha Gas Plant and Wheatstone LNG, we were thrilled to join forces once more for this exceptional project."
KBSS had 45 staff members working on the contract and coordinated scopes with 44 subcontractor employees. Making it a total team of close to 100 employees for the first scope onsite.
Terry Klowss, Bechtel Site Manager for Pluto Train 2 said working with KBSS on the temporary facilities refurbishment had played an integral role in supporting the Project.
“Its local facility in Karratha also provides specialised machining services, which has been a valuable resource.”
Building strong and supportive relationships with local suppliers and contractors is integral to the success of projects like Woodside’s Scarborough Energy Project.
The Scarborough Energy Project
The Scarborough Energy Project will provide a boost to the WA economy and communities, growing jobs and bringing work through the supply chain. The project is also supporting investment in education, training and jobs.
A second processing train, Pluto Train 2, is being constructed within the existing Pluto LNG facility located near Karratha in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. It will also support local energy security, by providing up to an extra 225 Terajoules per day of new capacity into the WA domestic gas market.
The project is providing various opportunities for local businesses in Karratha. As of August 2024, with collaboration from Woodside’s Pluto Train 2 lead contractor, Bechtel, the Scarborough Energy Project has contracted more than 87 Karratha businesses and is committed to spend more than A$115 million locally.
