Energy security

Significant Topic

Securing access to reliable and affordable energy is a priority for many nations as they decarbonise.

Our approach

The energy transition is about nations achieving reliable and affordable energy whilst they also reduce emissions. Natural gas of the kind produced by Woodside provides the world’s growing population with a secure, reliable and affordable source of energy to help people lead better lives.

Energy consumption underpins development and as countries’ living standards improve, energy use per capita is expected to increase.

Our performance

The sale of 10% of the Scarborough Joint Venture to LNG Japan and of 15.1% to JERA, is an example of the importance our customers place on ensuring a secure supply of energy to support economic growth and complement renewable energy in their decarbonisation journey.

Woodside is supplying reliable energy for today and investing in the energy needed for tomorrow.

We have a proven track record of providing secure energy supply to our customers, both domestically and internationally.

We supply LNG to major gas and electricity utilities, trading houses and industrial buyers around the world. In addition, we supply crude oil, condensate, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). We are also collaborating with our customers on new energy products and lower-carbon services such as hydrogen, ammonia and carbon, capture and storage.

Our marketing and trading strategy is to build a diverse customer base. Our relationships with customers in Australian and international energy markets have been maintained through a track record of reliable delivery and expertise across contracting, marketing and trading.

In 2024, Woodside produced and purchased 177.7 LNG cargoes, equivalent to supplying energy to power almost a third of homes in Japan for 12 months.1

Failure to deliver reliable, affordable energy can jeapordise the energy transition.

Natural gas is expected to have a sustained role in the energy transition.2,3,4,5,6

In 2024, Woodside acquired Louisiana LNG, which has a total permitted capacity of 27.6 million tonnes per annum. This would enable Woodside to better service global customers and capture marketing optimisation opportunities across the Atlantic and Pacific Basins.

Further greenfield exploration for oil and gas resources has the potential to high grade our portfolio and improve our ability to thrive through the energy transition. New resources that are more competitive – for example, lower-cost, lower-carbon, or closer to infrastructure – than other existing global discovered resources are more likely to attract investment to meet the available demand for oil and gas.
